Once upon a time… We all heard that in the Grimm brothers’ or Andersen’s tales and watching our favourites Disney movies as Aladdin (definitely my favourite) and The Lion King. However it’s way more rare to become a witness of such magic in a feature movie. Damien Chazelle’s second feature movie, La La Land is pure magic both as a tale and as a piece of art.
Synopsis: A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles.
After his dazzling and brutal Whiplash, Damien Chazelle was already thinking about creating his La La Land when we talked to him in the Deauville Film Festival. At that time he was only thinking of a musical with Miles Teller. “I have a dream”. Damien Chazelle can’t stop saying now how much he’s glad that Hollywood said no to his project for many years. He was able to become his own fool. With his freedom of independent director and his team, they created what nobody could have ever imagine: a Masterpiece, a true American dream musical like only Hollywood knew how to make.
The casting, though hard to get, is truly magical with the two great Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Their chemistry is something rare in cinema, as Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. Their duo is undeniably perfect and makes the dreamy La La Land even more magical. For their third time working together (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Gangster Squad), both Ryan and Emma challenged themselves to become the new Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn and learned how to sing, dance and for Ryan Gosling to become an accomplished jazz pianist.
“Here’s to the fools who dream, crazy as they may seem”
Musical composer Justin Hurwitz should continue to dream. His work with Damien Chazelle will stay forever in your mind. The songs and music he composed for La La Land bring back Jazz to the new age. Colourful, poetic and full of dreams and sense, La La Land is really a successful musical.
Piece of art, La La Land cinematography and colours are truly outstanding. Hollywood glamour is back with a pink scenery, red and blue dresses, and happiness is sang and danced all over LA, the City of Stars. Damien Chazelle’s dream makes you want to dream. Believe in what you want, you’ll need time, but your dreams deserve time to be real. Damien Chazelle was patient, hard worker and created a masterpiece. Why not you ? Being myself a dreamer I can’t tell you how much I’ve been touched by this story.
For all the fools, keep dreaming.
